Movies has it.  The M. Night Shyamalan directed picture stars Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Jessica Jade Andres, Aasif Mandvi, Shaun Toub, Cliff Curtis and Keong Sim.  The Last Airbender is based on a Nickelodoen animated TV series of the same name.

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.

The movie marks a depart from M. Night Shyamalan’s usual pretzel-like movies.  The movie looks pretty nice visually and doesn’t look terrible on the whole.  Not having ever watched the show I can’t offer an opinion on if it is a faithful adaptation or what have you.  The Last Airbender is set for a July 2nd release.

New clip from Sandler movie Grown Ups http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/10/new-clip-from-sandler-movie-grown-ups/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/10/new-clip-from-sandler-movie-grown-ups/#comments Wed, 10 Feb 2010 23:23:09 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=834 Columbia Pictures has released a new 45 second clip from their upcoming comedy Grown Ups.

Grown Ups, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade, is a comedy about five friends and former teammates who reunite years later to honor the passing of their childhood basketball coach.  With their wives (Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph) and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier.  Picking up where they left off, they discover why growing older doesn’t mean growing up.

The clip isn’t all that funny and the cast has made some serious stinkers, but I don’t totally hate it yet.  Maybe as more things are released I will grow to.  I attached the trailer below as well for those who haven’t seen it.  Grown Ups hits the big screen on June 25th.

Mission Impossible IV: Making an original movie http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/10/mission-impossible-iv-making-an-original-movie/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/10/mission-impossible-iv-making-an-original-movie/#comments Wed, 10 Feb 2010 23:04:48 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=831 Paramount Pictures announced that they will be making a forth Mission Impossible.  The film will be produced by Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams, and will star Cruise just as all its predecessors.  Paramount has the release date for MI IV set for Memorial Day, 2011.  The picture is currently without a director but the studio, as well as Cruise and Abrams, are looking to remedy that soon.  Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are writing the script, which will be based off an idea from Cruise and Abrams.

From Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Brad Grey, “Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise.”

The Mission Impossible franchise has grossed over $1.4 billion dollars globally, but Cruise has been out of the spotlight for a while, other than for being out of his damned mind so it’s hard to see this movie getting the kind of draw the earlier films did.  Sweet theme music though.

The Wild Hunt looks awesome http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/the-wild-hunt-looks-awesome/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/the-wild-hunt-looks-awesome/#comments Tue, 09 Feb 2010 23:20:53 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=827 FilmDrunk has a trailer for the LARP Viking movie The Wild Hunt and it looks like pretty bad ass.  Directed by Alexandre Franchi, the film is currently showing at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.  Description from TIFF:

In a dark forest, an ancient European ritual is about to take place. A battle is brewing between the power-hungry Celts, the rampaging Vikings, the secretive wood elves and the mysterious shaman Murtagh (Trevor Hayes). The night has finally come for Murtagh to unleash his latest fiendish scheme. But in the heat of battle, the worst happens: one of his men is hit five times and the referee rules him dead – he’s out of the game until he can regenerate. Even worse, someone breaks character, the most egregious transgression possible in this elaborate game of dress-up.

Clever and intense, The Wild Hunt is set in the fantasy-reality of a large role-playing game. The film’s story mirrors that of the legend behind the game: Erik (Ricky Mabe) goes looking for his girlfriend, Evelyn (Tiio Horn), who has left him for the game. He will need the help of his brother Bjorn (Mark A. Krupa), who happens to be the Viking leader and owner of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. (Erik has been storing the weapon on a shelf at his place.) Erik’s entry into the game angers the dedicated players when he refuses to role play, setting fantasy and reality on a collision course on the night of the wild hunt’s re-enactment.

The Wild Hunt is the first feature from Alexandre Franchi, and it smacks of geek authenticity, thanks to its setting in the pseudo-medieval village of Duché de Bicolline, a role-playing venue near Shawinigan, Quebec. Many actual players serve as background actors. The film disguises itself well, rapidly changing tone and crafting an unnerving atmosphere that keeps you on edge. The superb cast lends necessary naturalism and humour while acting like people acting. Capturing the culture of costume play and the potentially dangerous intersection of real and made-up worlds, The Wild Hunt is a timely and potent comment on the consuming nature of adopting another identity, even within a game, and the modern yearning for ritual.

I know that was a lot to read but check out the trailer below.  It looks like a unique, clever idea that delivers on comedy and bad assery.

Chris Nolan is Superman’s Godfather http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/chris-nolan-is-supermans-godfather/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/chris-nolan-is-supermans-godfather/#comments Tue, 09 Feb 2010 23:11:48 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=825 Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Chris Nolan, renowned director of the new Batman franchise,  has been asked to oversee development of the newest Superman reboot, dubbed Superman 3.0. From Deadline Hollywood:

Let us emphasize that Superman 3.0 is in the early stages of development. And we doubt Nolan would direct. This wouldn’t be a sequel to Superman Returns but a completely fresh franchise.

The Superman franchise was last rebooted in 2006, but was universally hated and failed at the box office.  Perhaps under Nolan’s guide they could turn things around like with Batman.

More Captain America news http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/more-captain-america-news/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/more-captain-america-news/#comments Tue, 09 Feb 2010 16:58:25 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=822 Newsarama has some more information from Joe Johnston on The First Avenger: Captain AmericaYesterday we found out the movie would have Captain America performing at a USO show and today more news about how things are going to go down.

The film will be bookended with scenes set in the present day that presumably will set the stage for “The Avengers” movie.

“That’s the way this story ends. [Cap] is…at the end of this film, he’s been brought back and been unfrozen, revived and he is definitely a fish out of water. He’s a 1942 guy in 2012…it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Sounds like they are going to try to cram some humor into the mix, hopefully they don’t go overboard, fail, and ruin the movie and/or series.  Johnston says the first movie will the journey Steve Rogers, the scrawny volunteer for the super-soldier project, undergoes and how it effects him mentally, as well as physically.  At this rate by the time Johnston finishes the press tour for The Wolfman we will know everything there is to know about this movie.  Keep tuned for who will be playing Captain America, which should be announced in a couple weeks.

The First Avenger: Captain America is set for a summer 2011 release.

24 may become a movie http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/24-may-become-a-movie/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/09/24-may-become-a-movie/#comments Tue, 09 Feb 2010 16:38:40 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=819 Variety is reporting that hit Fox TV show 24 could be getting itself a feature film.  The script is penned by Billy Ray, who also wrote State of Play and Flightplan.  Variety says it is the very early stages of development and it could never happen depending on what happens with the show.  If Fox doesn’t renew 24 for a ninth season they could potentially sell the show to another network, which would put this project on hold.

Ray’s pitch, which takes Jack Bauer to Europe, was a hit with Fox executives and producers of the TV series, reports Variety.

The trade adds that the script came through 24 star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who is reportedly eager to turn the series into a feature franchise. (ComingSoon.net)

I’m not sure they’ll be able to pack enough terrorism and explosions into a feature length film to live up to the show, but it may never happen anyway, so who knows.  More information as it surfaces.

Dark Knight sequel being written exclamation point http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/08/dark-knight-sequel-being-written-exclamation-point/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/08/dark-knight-sequel-being-written-exclamation-point/#comments Mon, 08 Feb 2010 21:16:02 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=816 Deadline Hollywood has a story about David Goyer leaving TV show FlashForward that has some information that should have gotten a post to itself.  The Dark Knight sequel is in the process of being written!  Excerpt from the story:

Of course, Goyer’s feature career is really heating up, since he co-wrote Batman Begins, and penned the story for The Dark Knight, and is now writing the third Batman installment with Chris Nolan’s brother Jonah.

The internet can’t convey how happy I am to hear this is starting to move forward.  Stay tuned for any further news on this that might arise.

Bill Murray confirmed for Ghostbusters 3 http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/08/bill-murray-confirmed-for-ghostbusters-3/ http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/2010/02/08/bill-murray-confirmed-for-ghostbusters-3/#comments Mon, 08 Feb 2010 20:53:02 +0000 Ruttiger http://solidstudiosfilms.com/blog4/?p=813 In a recent interview with Mail Online Bill Murray confirmed he will be starring in Ghostbusters 3.  He also confirmed that Sigourney Weaver was right when she speculated what he’ll be in the movie.  He will be playing a ghost. From the interview:

I’ll come back in Ghostbusters 3 only if I get to be a ghost.  I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.

Straight from the horses mouth folks, Bill Murray is going to be a ghost.  He also talked up Ghostbusters and blasted Ghostbusters 2.

The first 45 minutes of the original Ghostbusters is some of the funniest stuff ever made.  The second one was disappointing, because the special-effects guys took over.  I had something like two scenes – and they’re the only funny ones in the movie.

Bill Murray: Pro Ghostbusters, against Ghostbusters 2.  The script is being written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg who are executive producers and writers on NBC sitcom The Office.
